The annual Showcase highlights from Arlene Wites

On September 27, I had a wonderful and rewarding opportunity to travel to Washington, D.C. with two extraordinary ladies from our Fashion Design program - recent graduate Karen Ortiz and second quarter student/winner of the first Passion for Fashion national scholarship competition Elana Bloom. Together, we represented The Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale at the Career College Showcase on Capitol Hill.

The annual Showcase highlights the success and diversity of career colleges and demonstrates to members of Congress and their staff the opportunities career colleges offer students and the positive impact graduates have on today's workforce. In addition to the several technical and medical colleges, we joined Art Institute of Charlotte which focused on Fashion Merchandising, while our presentation was on Fashion Design.
Karen Ortiz, June 2006 graduate now employed with Perry Ellis, schlepped her amazing garments all the way from Miami Beach, and fitted them on two size 2 Art Institute of Philadelphia students. The ladies paraded and sauntered around the Cannon Building Caucus Room answering questions and delighting the guests who then made a beeline to Karen for a Q & A before returning to their offices. We even had a mini runway show! Jaws dropped and eyes popped as 18-year-old Elana explained how she won last year's fashion design competition while showing off the tunic she designed and constructed.

It was a remarkable adventure and one I'm sure that Karen and Elana won't ever forget. We are very fortunate to be involved with and associated with such talented, creative, and poised students and graduates who successfully represent our college and our mission.
