3rd year of the Cool vs. Cruel Fashion Design Competition

Public Relations and Ai’s Fashion Department are pleased to announce the launch of the 3^rd year of the Cool vs. Cruel Fashion Design Competition, exclusively for currently enrolled Art Institutes’ students, sponsored by the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS). In this competition, fashion students will be challenged to create a fur-free evening wear, outwear or suit design inspired by several designers’ garments. Guidelines, entry forms and designer examples are attached. This competition’s launch and deadline align with Q1. The competition launches July 9 and deadlines on September 22. Our hope is that this competition can be incorporated into the curriculum of many fashion design classes in the upcoming quarter.

Each participating school will hold a local judging, where one first place local winner is selected to progress to the national level of the competition. In the national level of the competition, all local first place winning entries will be judged by a panel of industry professionals in New York City, to determine the grand prize award winner in the competition.

The grand prize award winner will receive and all-expenses-paid trip to New York City for a press event, in the first week of November 2007 and an all-expense-paid five day internship opportunity TBD in New York City with a designer who is involved with the Humane Society of the United States Fur-Free Campaign. Second and third place winners in the national competition will each receive a $100 gift certificate and finalists from participating schools will receive an official certificate of participation and an HSUS “Goodie” bag.

We would like to encourage participating schools, where appropriate, to host a gallery show of the designs in their school’s local competition, to help garner media attention regarding this competition.

There are two sets of guidelines for the Cool vs. Cruel Fashion Design Competition attached, the first for faculty members administering the competition which contain a list of internal target dates regarding this initiative and one for current students who would like to participate in the competition that contain only the deadline date.

Template press releases will be provided as the competition progresses for dissemination in your local market.

Currently, the entries from last year’s competition are on a traveling gallery show throughout The Art Institutes system, we plan to do the same traveling gallery show with the winning garments from the 2007 competition.

Hello,
Once again I will be putting together the Volunteers which includes Dressers for the (Mercedes Benz Fashion Week) Swims Shows in Miami Beach July 11-July14, July 10 is a prep day. Need volunteers for various duties such as stuffing gift bags, dressing, and setting up Front of House/ Backstage and Sponsor assistance

Contacting you early, since I know the quarter ends in a few weeks and starts again right before the Swim Shows start.
I’ll be following up with the proper paperwork of schedules and as soon as I get more information from the NY office. Planning on 2 shifts per day 4pm – 9pm / 6 pm –11pm (this might change) ranging 20-40 volunteers per shift depending on Designer line up.

Model fittings for the 2007 fashion show, Culture Shock, will be held on Saturday May 19th from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in room 327 of the main building. The final fitting will be held on Wednesday, May 23rd from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m. in room 334 of the main building. Those models who have received emails should be in attendance. Those models who have received emails need to call Kahsandra Frazer, the Model Coordinator, to schedule a time to come in. Her phone number is 954-873-4539. If you have received an email, but do not come for fittings, we will assume that you are not interested in modeling for the show.

Female models, please bring a pair of high heels. All models need to have appropriate undergarments. Thank you all for your participation!

I truly hope that everyone got a chance to go to Material World!! It was better than ever. They had stands from all over the world as well as a new addition with the computer and machine side to it. I got to see up close the new Gerber software including V-Stitcher and all of the Juki machines too! The most important piece that I got from the trip,however, was a website that I wasn't too familiar with. www.stylecareers.com It is the LARGEST, FASHION ONLY job listing website on the internet!! As we all know, Mrs. Colussy just returned from her trip to Japan. It must have been an extraordinary trip because the students went to many different places as well as got to experience much of the culture! Places they visited included:
Osaka, Kyoto, Tokyo, as well as the Harajuku shopping district! How exciting to shop there! They also got to experience the country and its culture by going to the temples, fish markets, had a kodak moment with Buddah, a kimono fashion show, markets, and took a cruise on Lake Hakone.
Lauren Elizabeth Stone-Kop, one of the attending students quoted, "A good experience. I am happy I went before I got out of school. The culture was beautiful and totally different. Its just lovely."

Shuttles will leave the dorms at 8 am. Tickets are $10 and are on a first come, first serve basis. There are only 100 tickets available for this once in a lifetime opportunity. A private, 60 foot, glass bottom boat- all for you and your closest friends…
There will be breakfast served on the dock at 8:30 am, followed by a narrated tour of the intracoastal on the way to the reef. All equipment is provided. Please bring your beach towels. The entire trip will last until approximately noon. There will be a beach after-party beginning promptly at the conclusion of the snorkeling trip. Lunch will be served.

Student Gov’t will be selling the tickets in the lobby of MB or you can purchase from Haydee Giraldo in the Student Affairs office in HW 101.

Gen Art has announced a design competition, sponsored by Perrier, based on the submission of design sketches/storyboards of one look that best interprets a theme: “POP”. Five finalists' design boards will be showcased at the Styles 2007 Show on May 22, 2007. The winner will receive a $10,000 grant and then create one garment inspired from their design board, which will be showcased at Gen Art's Shop Miami event on June 15th, 2007.

Gen Art is looking for volunteers to help us with the always exciting Miami casting calls for Project Runway!

Miramax Television is once again teaming up with supermodel Heidi Klum, Elle Magazine and Bravo for Season 4 of 'Project Runway', a behind-the-scrim documentary series and competition to find a new star designer and launch his or her career with the opportunity of a lifetime.

Up-and-coming designers will be attending open calls around the country to present their work to a panel of fashion judges in hopes of getting a chance to compete on the national TV series, which will air in the fall.

We are looking for volunteers to assist with the open call in Miami which will take place:

Miami – April 5th, 2007

Trend Report for Jewelry Spring/Summer 2007

For fellow Floridians, fashion trends indicate a change of season more than the weather. This season seems to be all about the extremes. You're either wearing
bold vibrant colors to the utmost, or your wearing very subtle
monotones. The color palette for spring/summer 2007 is the
primary bold colors such as bring red, blue, yellow and a strong apple
green.
Fashion week in New York City, held every September and
February, introduces all the latest up and coming trends for the
seasons. A large group of jewelry designers display
their new ‘it’ looks. Their displays are usually a good showcase to the
buyers of jewelry trends to watch for the following season.
Another good way to get a head start on the new trends for the season is always
keep updated on the new trends for the season is consulting current fashion magazines. They always show the trends at least a month or two before the goods hit main stream media. So if you want to wear something before your friends try to do research a little bit ahead of time.
Here are a few tips to look for when starting to revamp your
Spring/Summer jewelry collection. Southwestern colors like tan, clay,
orange and brown are a major staple. Cool water colors like greens,
blues, silver and white will help add a little bit of edge to your
summer. Warm reds and fuchsia Ink-like colors accented with gold
jewelry are also hot! If you're wearing something really bold this summer which is
very in this season such as bright red, vibrant blue, and bright yellow
lots of silver and gold will help smooth out the look. Another fun
jewelry trend that will be hitting the stores this year is
fruit displayed in fun ways as jewelry. Everything from apples,
watermelons, oranges, pears, and strawberries is being worn as the
staple for Spring/Summer. Expect to see lots of charm bracelets and
necklaces.

Jo’s bio:

After getting her Master’s in Mass Communication in 1999 from India, Jyoti Peswani, a.k.a. Jo has passionately worked in Advertising, Corporate Communications and Journalism. She realized she was meant to be a writer very early in life. Currently, she is the Editor-in-chief of a lifestyle magazine in Miami. Jo’s teaching style is unique – she tries to give her students a feel of the real world and likes to ready them for the work place ahead of time. She believes students come in two categories: the doers and the complainers. The cream always finds a way to rise to the top.

Fashion Writing class at fashion department AIFL

Current topics in fashion marketing was partly reinvented as Fashion Writing. This class covers fashion reporting, color trends, covering events, magazine writing and direct marketing. The specs was broadly fashion, but in the quarters to come it will be expanded to more categories. Mr. West’s direction and guidance has been priceless through out the evolution of this class. With encouragement from Mr. Milman, we are going to post some of the students work on the blog.
Being in the fashion industry requires astute powers of observation- regardless of the domain you belong to, textiles, pattern making, forecasting or trend watching. Fashion is all about people, but in a very intuitive way. You have to get so involved in the pop culture, that you can guess what’s going to be the next hot trend. Paradoxically, fashion is not about trends, it’s about being individualistic and iconoclastic. Think of all the style icons, Jackie O, Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn and the like. These people were trend setters not followers. Designers like Coco Chanel broke the mold and modernized women’s clothing.

The industry as a whole is guised as being elitist, owing to huge dollops of glamour, style and of course, pricing. In my opinion, that is a huge contradiction ingeniously camouflaged behind the artsy façade. It involves the science of understanding, anticipating and knowing the popular zeitgeist much before it comes to being. Instinctive and intuitive, fashion doesn’t just recycle itself over the years, it in fact improvises a mood that was once successful.

To say that research is important, would be saying we need air to breathe. Knowledge is undoubtedly important, but applying what you learn is more important than anything else. Understanding fabrics, colors and trends in their entirety is the first step. Just like seven notes of music are a source of infinite rhapsodies, color and style patterns in fashion are eternal. Fashion has existed since prehistoric times, cave men and women were known to accessorize and it something that’s never going away.

Fashion writing involves knowing the inside scoop about fabrics, trims and styles and translating that for fashionable men and women in a language they understand. Writing in general, involves simplification and creativity. As a fashion writer you have to add a new twist in terms of color, style and tips, do something different and not repeat what you do every year!

To conclude, the saying, “you write what you know” rings true. You know fashion - writing about it should be easy, should be creative. But creativity is not all fun and being “artsy,” it requires disciplining of the mind and forming the right habits. If you don’t have that, it’s hard to make writing a simple task. It is my belief that everyone can write. All you have to do is sort your thoughts out and put them down as if you were conversing with a friend, this while you apply the rules.

There is one person who can truly inspire you and that is…YOU! Do you have what it takes?

Sometimes, fashion is not just about the clothes that we put on our
bodies or the designs that we create for people to wear. Sometimes,
fashion is about art, about improvising and, in the words of the
infamous Tim Gunn from Project Runway, "making it work". And that's
just what the Fashion of Paper Show was all about. I was given the
opportunity to work with a graphic design company to create and
complete a garment made entirely from paper for this show. It was
one of the most rewarding and exciting experiences of my life to
date!

From the very first moment that I began working with the staff of
Laser Advertising, the company that designed the dress, I was made
to feel as I was a member of a team. Natalia and Francesca were
very accommodating of all us. They worked with everyone's
school/work schedules to make sure that everyone had time to work
on the dress. They made sure that everyone was very involved with
the creative process of taking the garment from concept to
completion. They allowed us work space in their office, provided
most of the materials, and threw in their lot with us designers
after hours. I was always treated like a professional, and I could
tell that they valued whatever contributions that I made to the
design.

At first, I was a little worried because we were given just a
little over two weeks to complete the dress. But, thanks to the
organizational skills of Natalia and Francesca, and the hard work
of everyone involved with the project, we completed everything on
time. The design was beautiful, and even though we hit a few speed
bumps during construction, we managed to make everything work. For
example, we had to add a piece to the top of the bodice because the
model was coming out of it! And the day before the show, we
scrapped our original belt design and created a whole new belt from
scratch! But after two fittings and two dress rehearsals, the dress
fit our model beautifully.

The materials that we used to create the dress were somewhat
unorthodox, since we were working with paper instead of fabric. Let
me just say here that hot glue can fix just about any problem! The
paper that we used was provided by Unisource, the company that
sponsored the show. We had a variety of colors, weights, and
texutres to choose from to create the dress. We chose an earthy
palette in mulitple weights and textures, since the theme of our
dress was "The Tree of Life". The dress was also loosely inspired
by the architectural mosaics of Gaudi in Barcelona. We stenciled,
cut, crinkled, shaped, textured, and glued our hearts out until we
reached the desired results: a beautiful, if somewhat slightly
abstracted, tree of life. We were extremely pleased with the final
product of our efforts.

The show itself was also magnificent! Held in the Miami Convention
Center, the fashion show was part of a larger trade show, a
graphics convention. There were a total of 15 garments, each
representing a particular country or theme (like the world). The
pieces in the show were just amazing! Some of the garments so
closely resembled fabric garments that I almost couldn't believe my
eyes! Each dress was unique and artistic. It was like being at a
fashion show and an art exhibit at the same time!

All in all, this was definitely one of the most unique and
gratifying experiences that I've had as a fashion design student
here at the Art Institute. There are no words to describe the
elation I felt when I saw our dress come down the runway. Those few
moments of complete happiness are the main reason that I decided to
become a fashion designer. Would I participate in this project
again? Without a doubt! In fact, I am looking forward to doing it
again next year! I would also like to take the time to thank the
all the employees at Laser Advertising for collaborating with us,
helping us out when we needed it,and putting up with the mess!
Thanks to our entire design team: Natalia, Francesca, Nicole, and
Kafi - our dress was amazing! And thanks to our fabulous model,
Rebecca, who totally worked that runway! Thanks to Mr. Milman for
offering me this opportunity, and most of all, thanks to God for
making all things possible!

We would like to invite your students to apply to the 2007 New Designer Fashion Grand Prix, a major international fashion contest in Japan to be held in Tokyo in September of this year.The New Designer Fashion Grand Prix was established in 1984 by Onward Kashiyama Co., Ltd., Japan's largest apparel company, with a goal of cultivating and supporting new designers who will play a leading role in the coming era. Gen Art Miami is looking for a number of dedicated volunteers for Fresh Faces in Fashion ‘07 taking place Poolside at the Flamingo South Beach on Saturday, March 31^st.

Fresh Faces in Fashion is Gen Art’s most innovative and talked about fashion event of the season! This high-profile full fledge runway show will feature 9 top emerging designers hailing from New York and Miami chosen by a selection committee that includes members of Miami's fashion industry elite. Last year’s event was attended by over 1,000 guests, including press, celebrities and young, affluent Miamians.

MELANOMA FOUNDATION FASHION SHOW!!!

Featured this past Monday was the Melanoma Foundation Fashion Show, hosted by Melanoma Skin Cancer Foundation. At the Melanoma fashion show international designers were welcomed to display their collections at MarLago, one of Donald Trump's houses, in Palm Beach. Some of the collections included Couture designs from French Designers, whom displayed their beautifully hand beaded gowns on the runway. Helping out at the event were several students from AIFL who were able to go backstage to style and dress the models. Fashion club member, Danielle Del Sordo, was excieted to help out at the event and says [...] "it was a good experience to participate in this event, and I will definitely be there again next year!" Danielle along with the other AIFL students not only walked away with expereince in fashion show production they also recieved fully packed gift bags that were given to the guests.

3. In depth tour of the city of Paris and MOST of it's premier cultural sites!
4. Tour of one of Paris's oldest fashion schools
5. Visit to Haute Couture Designer's home! (mansion and atelier)
6. Several students gleaned job opportunities upon graduation!
7. Made new friends and memories to last a lifetime.
8. I personally had 3 other appointments to make arrangements for MORE job opportunities, internships, collaborations and appointments for my FILLED 2008 tour!

ANDRE ....My desire is to make book for each of the designers students met. Similar to the one I made for you for China….can we chat about that?

Now let's take a closer look in depth of what we did….

Thurs.
Arrive in Paris and went immediately to visit the symbol of Paris the Eiffel Tower
Time for lunch a bit of shopping and then off to meet top…
Paris designer Ana Quasoar at her studio near the chic Place Vendome area of Paris! Ana has many VIP clients for her wedding fashions along with her Haute Couture clients of Christian Lacroix and Dior who purchase her hand painted textiles! Several students shared their portfolio with Ana, as a result from conversations with Ana - she will be taking Marcia Harris and Pascal Weber to work with her when they graduate!!!!

After dinner a handful of students continued to sample the local café' nightlife near the hotel before unpacking and then catching up on much needed rest!

Friday.

Bright and early students were off on their second fashion day in Paris.

Highlights included a Tour of YSL - Ms. Colussy has interviewed numerous designers for her up coming book entitled: Fashion Undressed. Thanks to these connections she was able to garner access for her students to several "insider secrets to Paris fashion. Once such experience was visiting the Yves St. Laurent exhibition based on his famous African collection. Mr. St Laurent's personal attorney, who escorted the students into the former atelier, followed this up with a more personal tour for the 40 year achieve collection for YSL from his early days at age 17 where he designed for Dior himself! The students toured the vaults of the one-of-a-kind Haute Couture designs of this 20th century genius. Students were also privy to a demonstration of how the collections is restored and preserved. At the time of our visit the workers were working on the recent donation of NY socialite Nan Kempner. Nan was known as one of the premier American socialites to support Haute Couture. Nan's clothes represent decades of the custom work by YSL. There will be a showing of the collection beginning in May at the foundation in Paris.

Students also visited the studio, presentation room and the concept store of Longchamp. Longchamp has been a family business of leather goods, accessories and now clothing for three generations! Students had a full presentation along with a time of question with the granddaughter of the founder named Sophie Delafontaine and her head designer. Afterwards students purchased the signature 1625 handbag while Ms. Colussy's shared portfolios with Sophie. The result: FM student Jen Miller work was selected to be reviewed by Sophie's brother and co-owner who is charge of the NEW concept store in New York City. Jen's CV and samples landed her an opportunity to work as a stylist with the company in NYC! The best part was the look on Jen's moms face as she saw it all unfold before her eyes. As a mom, I can only imagine her pride at her daughter's success. For those who did not know Jen and I had several meetings to discuss her portfolio prior to our trip and how it should LOOK, sooooo Jen, aren't you glad you listened to me?

Students took advantage of the lunchtime in Paris to visit several other major retail venues as well as sight seeing stops including the Arc de Triomphe, Notre Dame, Palais Garnier, and more.

The night brought student friends on the tour a chance to closer bond to one another with night visits to the city including walking on the Champs Elysees. Still others sampled the wonderful café's and pastries that Paris is known for!

Saturday.
Thankfully by Sat. the taste of spring weather in Paris was still on our side
As students were off to visit with one of the oldest Paris fashion colleges: Ecole' Fleuri Delsporte. Ms. Delsporte was a major fashion illustrator during the 30, 40's and 50's. She founded her school based on unique method of rendering fashion. Illustration along with the art of fine sewing skills is the hallmark of French design.

Ms. Delsporte and the schools current president (also her daugher-in-law) invited students to preview behind the "seams" of the secrets of their illustration classes. Hopes for future exchange and collaborations between France and the US are being reviewed. One insightful glimpse into this doyenne of fashion was this hearing accounts from this talented woman's love for America. Why? She dearly appreciated our liberation of her beloved city. Unknown to the students, she shared with me how she has suffered the ravages of WWII. What overwhelmed me was her poignant tale of how she risk her own life to hide and protect many Jews from the Nazi occupation. She was also one of the key mentors of a young Olivier Lapidus who learned to illustrate at her school.

The Lapidus family is especially significant to Paris Haute Couture, Olivier's father and aunt both were members of the Chambre. (The organization of Haute Couture designers)

Students rested for lunch before they continued to enjoy the sunshine from the view of Haute Couture designer Olivier Lapidus studio and mansion on the famous Avenue Foch! Can you imagine? A top French designer opening his home and his studio to over 20 students? Recent grad, Eunah Lee is currently working side-by-side this amazing man. Olivier has made history with his many contributions to fashion in the area of technology. However, for those in the know, viewing first hand his quite and humble man share with students his secrets and encouraged their dreams and aspirations. Olivier is one of only a handful of designers who has won the coveted "GOLD THIMBLE" award. This is the equivalent of the Oscars!

Later in the day, students we honored by La La Rose lingerie designer meeting up with them directly on location at one Paris's top specialty department stores. Stephanie shared with students her meteoric rise to prominence. Her designs outsell top brand such as Dior and others, as she is known for one of the trendiest hot labels in lingerie's.

Also did you know? Arrangements have been made for one student who did NOT attend this tour, FD student Danielle Lovello to work along Stephanie after she graduates this summer! My contacts are NOT for just the students who can afford the luxury of travel…be sure to tell your friends ANY student with a worthy portfolio can make an appointment with me to share their work with the designers and companies I visit.

Sunday brought a bit of down time for students who enjoyed a private motor coach tour of the city. Next students continued their tour to Versailles.

As Versailles the students were treated to a private guided tour with one of Paris's fashion journalist. Rolas who studied at the American University in Paris is one of a handful of writers and guides who are licensed lead such tours.

Upon arriving back in the city students were given entrance to the Louvre. There they enjoyed visiting the famous Mona Lisa along with the thousands of other artifacts from one of the world's most remarkable museums.

The evening students dined on regional cuisine where it was planned to celebrate several student birthdays. However, because the students were anxious to savor their last night in Paris the students instead privately celebrated with their friends.

All in all it was a fantastic trip. Where students learned a lot about fashion, about Paris, about traveling, culture shock and even about themselves. As the casual observer it was delightful to see how many students came away with a deeper sense of who they were and who they wanted to be. I suspect they might just take those classes a bit more seriously after their Paris adventure. My trust is that they will deeply appreciate more the talented faculty who can best prepare them of their future. For those desiring to become illustrators, I predict that many will be sitting at the feet of Ms. Ivanova to glean more of her secrets as with the pattern making, portfolio and draping genius of Ms.T, Adrian, Ernestine. While I can say for sure that Ms. O'Reilly's surface design class will now be more appreciated than ever thanks to viewing the work of Ana Quosoar. And finally for our own Tim Gunn, Andre West and as well as our all -around fashion guru Mr. Milman ---how blessed our students. As for FM…Kerry and Chris…watch out you will soon be bombarded with groupies yearning for your insights!

Monday
Finally I was pleased that all of my students successfully navigated re-entry into the US… For my foreign students all I can say is WHEW! (Right Marcia? Over 1 hour and counting!) For me the greatest joy was to finally arrive at the gate to see the precious impromptu to birthday celebration in full force. To all of you who came with me… my heart is that you each came back with a wonderful memory that was unique and special to you. It did not have to be fashion related, if you had a special time with your family or friends that is more than enough. Relationships eclipse fashion and should last forever.

For all of you who showed me respect on this trip - I deeply thank you. Someday my prayer is that you look back on this trip you will know the heart I had to serve you with all of the care and preparation that went into this trip. I also hope you will treasure all the wonderful new friends you met along the way…. I am presently collecting thank you card or samples of work to send off in packages for each of the designers we met. My experience has been they appreciate a collective effort more than the isolated few who write them.

FTL MODA!!

for those who weren't aware, Fort Lauderdale debut there first fashion week beginning January 25 and lasted until the 28. Debuting designers from all over the world including several designers from are very own AIFL!!! This event is the first of many, and maybe one day fort Lauderdale fashion week will be overrun by AIFL students/alumnis! AIFL collaborated with FTL MODA so that AIFL fashion club students could volunteer to help out at the event. Organized and directed by our very own Sierra McCord, fashion design student, and headed by faculty member Mr. Milman a group of coordinators was was put together to organize over 100 volunteers for the event. Jobs included, ticket mastering, security, runners, dressers, ushering, etc. Each volunteer was able to experience each job in the event. Experiencing a live fashion show with international designers is a one of a kind experience! In addition to learning the actions for a fashion show AIFL fashion club members were able to work closely with high fashion designers, view couture fashion shows (FOR FREE), network amongst prominent guest, and get connected to other fashion design students. AIFL fashion club members thanks each member for volunteering!!!! SEE YOU NEXT YEAR!!

Christina, Mode magazine's resident keeper of "the closet," is commissioned by a prominent celebrity to design a dress to be worn at a formal public event-- but she's snowed in at the office! With twelve hours to execute her design and no fabric to work with, Christina is forced to the use everyday office supplies to make her creation.

That's where you come in. Help Christina make the formal dress!

Submit drawing(s) or sketch(es) of your Design, showing both the back and front of the garment, along with instructions on how to construct it (i.e. materials used, shape, form and color) only using office supplies such as tape, bubble wrap, shopping bags, calendars, shoe boxes, hole punchers, paper clips or newspaper, just to name a few. Also, submit an original Essay in 100 words or less, discussing the underlying concept for the Design.

A dress based on the winning design will appear in an upcoming episode of the show! The winning "designer" will receive a trip for two (2) to Los Angeles, CA for the taping of the Ugly Betty television show scheduled to take place on 02/02/2007, where a dress based upon the winner's Design will be incorporated in the Show.

Fort Lauderdale, Fla. – Tickets for FTL MODA, an incredible celebration of international fashion, music and art Jan. 25-28, 2007, are on sale at www.ftlmoda.com. The website also carries a detailed schedule of phenomenal events and information on designers and artists.

FTL MODA will bring 16 designers from around the world to Fort Lauderdale for two days of world-class fashion. Additionally, the event will introduce South Florida to several renowned artists and musical groups from Italy, the featured country for 2007. Events will be congregated in four locations throughout the greater Fort Lauderdale area: Nikki Marina at Westin Diplomat, Broward Center for the Performing Arts, China White nightclub and Victoria Park Shoppes.

Festivities will begin 8 p.m. Jan. 25 with an opening ceremony at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts, 201 SW 5th Ave., featuring designs from the fashion house of Enrico Coveri. Tickets for the opening are $135. The Broward Center’s Amaturo Theater will provide the backdrop for a concert by world-class orchestral group I Solisti Veneti noon, Jan. 28. The Fashion House of Enrico Coveri, lead by Francesco Martini Coveri, will present the American debut of its newest collection inspired by the paintings of Romero Britto and Adriano Buldrini at the magnificent, Italian-themed Opening Ceremony which will officially launch the four-day fashion and cultural event. FTL MODA to debut Italian Musical Sensation “Studio 3” Jan. 26

Fort Lauderdale, Fla. – FTL MODA, a celebration of international fashion, music and art, will present the American debut of top Italian boy band, Studio 3, Jan. 26. The group will perform 8 p.m. at China White nightclub, 109 SW 2nd Ave.

Studio 3 is made up of Marco, Gabriel and Vetro – all young, cute and extremely talented. Last summer "Potrei" (Power) their second album, hit the charts in the top position and won the Disco d'Oro (Gold Disc), a classification that is well respected in the International music industry.

Their first album, "Forse un Angelo" (Maybe an Angel), is currently listed on the Top European Charts. It contains a popular single by the same name. Studio 3’s first single was “Solo Te” (Only You) which reached immediate success and captivated audiences throughout Europe. It held a position in the Nielson Top 10 for its first six weeks.

FTL MODA to Debut Roots-Rock Phenoms “The Mandolin Brothers Band” Jan. 27

Fort Lauderdale, Fla. – FTL MODA, a celebration of international fashion, music and art, will present the American debut of Italian roots-rock band Mandolin Brothers Jan. 27. The group will perform 8 p.m. at China White nightclub, 109 SW 2nd Ave.

Pioneers of “Made in Italy” blues music, The Mandolin Brothers Band’s acoustic sound calls to mind the style of solo legend Bob Dylan, bands like Los Lobos and the Blasters and the soul of New Orleans.

In 2001 the band published its first CD, “For Real” (Fortuna Records), which contains almost exclusively original material and has received excellent reviews in Italian music magazines “Musica” and “Jam,” on websites such as www.rootshighway.it and www.blackdiamondbay.it and on radio stations. A second CD will be released this year.

The band first recorded three songs for the “Dixie in Rock” compilation (1985), which also included names like Tolo Marton and Baker Street Band and later appeared in compilations “Pavia Rock” (1990) and the “Blues House Sound” (1996). They self-produced “Roots and Roll Tape” In 1994.

The Mandolin Brothers Band currently includes Jimmy Ragazzon (lead vocals, harmonica, acoustic guitar), Paola Canevari (guitars), Bruno de Faveri (guitars, mandolin, vocals), Riccardo Maccabruni (accordion, keyboards, vocals), Joe Barreca (electric bass) and Daniele Negro (drums and percussions).

WARDROBE VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR SUPER BOWL PREGAME & HALFTIME SHOWS

41 Productions is looking for 40 volunteers to assist the wardrobe department with the Super Bowl Pregame and Halftime shows.

One group of volunteers will help set up the on-site wardrobe area and start working on the costumes and uniforms for the shows. (Volunteer title: Uniforms)

We need 6-8 stitchers for the Pregame show who can alter, sew and fit Cirque du Soleil costumes. (Volunteer title: Stitchers)

Finally, we need 20 additional volunteers for general wardrobe assistance…fittings, hanging and organizing costumes, getting people dressed, packing and unpacking, etc. (Volunteer title: Fitters)

This is a great opportunity to get hands-on experience with a large-scale production for your resume! Internship credit is also available if approved by your school.

Gen Art Miami is now looking for talented fashion, swimwear, and accessory designers who are based in Florida or Georgia to participate in the 4th Annual Fresh Faces in Fashion to be held on March 31st poolside on the bay at Flamingo South Beach. This is an unequaled opportunity to participate in a high-profile runway show attended by press, buyers, celebrities and fashion industry professionals, all at no cost to the designer.

Last year, Fresh Faces in Fashion showcased Miami's own Pelusium, Uli Herzner (recent Project Runway finalist), MIA Swimwear and Ecliptica, as well as Sarah Luna (New York), Tomer (New York), and local accessory designers Patricia Costa, Lauren Carina, and Jennifer Zeuner. Designers who have had their runway debut at Gen Art fashion shows include Zac Posen, Rebecca Taylor, Cosa Nostra by Jeffrey Sebelia and Binetti.

In order to be eligible to participate in Gen Art's Fresh Faces in Fashion event, applicants must meet the following requirements:

* Designer's label is less than 7 years old

* Designer has shipped and sold at least one season and is currently selling their items in at least one store

* Designer can show at least 10 of their own full looks

Fort Lauderdale, Fla. – FTL MODA will launch the concept of a greater Fort Lauderdale-based International Fashion Week, a concept unique in the United States, Jan. 25-28, 2007. This 4-day event is a “mini” version of what will be presented annually starting in 2008.

FTLMODA.com will carry designer information, schedule updates, promotional materials for media and information on tickets and passes.

FTL MODA will flaunt the hottest European, Latin and Caribbean designers in front of the American fashion scene and expose Fort Lauderdale to the international marketplace. Each of the 15 featured designers has been hand selected to premiere fresh, full Spring 2008 collections. Available will be haute couture for women and men, resort wear, swimwear, children’s wear, accessories, jewelry and footwear.

FTL MODA will redefine couture for the 21st century by returning it to the people. Fashionistas and rank and file alike will have the same opportunity to purchase directly at the event. Each showcase will go directly from the runway to the showroom, each of the more than 350 pieces from the model to a purchaser. Each design will be one-of-a-kind, cosmopolitan couture, constructed for immediate consumption.

FTL MODA will inspire a series of select cultural events in addition to two days of world-class fashion: an exposition by celebrated sculptural artist Massimo Sansavini, the American debut of Italian musical sensations Studio 3 and the Mandolin Brothers, a Venetian Carnival-themed opening event, a classical concert by renowned orchestral group I Solisti Veneti, a student fashion contest and scintillating after parties.

FTL MODA is a registered Florida non-profit organization. Partial net proceeds from FTL MODA also will be donated to the University of Miami Diabetes Research Institute led by Italian scientist Camillo Ricordi.

First, I'd like to thank you for your cooperation and your involvement.

This past friday, however, I was contacted by the initial organizer and Head Mgr. from "Contour Day Spa" to let me know that because of permits and other legalities he was unable to complete all necessary arrangements to have the Holiday Party and the Fashion Show as set for Dec. 9th.

Although he was very apologetic for the inconvenience, he still wants to keep the idea, and work on it further to prepare the event for February 2007 with a "Valentines" theme.

On the cover: Jacinta Ligon, a recent graduate of The Art Institute in Fort Lauderdale, won second place by producing a striking black leather dress ringed in white faux fur that combined elements of several designs.

Hospital the following is needed for the event i hope that you are

1. 30 to 35 students to dress the models and help with set-up

SweaterNation line during “Underground Sunshine,” an exclusive multimedia fashion show
Friday, December 1, 2006. Hosted by Juni Boutique’s Julie Johnson and Ninfa.
Armstrong’s inspiration for SweaterNation evolved from seeing the locals’ penchant for wearing
sweaters during her countless treks through Denmark and Scandinavia. The result is romantic,
edgy and forward-thinking dresses for the holiday season both here in Miami and abroad. The
line is constructed from hundreds of deconstructed sweaters, shawls, vintage and recycled
fabrics.
Accolades consistently surround Armstrong and her often witty, ironic and sensual designs.
Armstrong was recently City Link magazine’s cover story, and she was also featured in Gen Art’s
IGNITE! 2006 as well as its Shop Miami events. Her designs remain true to her “strategy for
renewal” philosophy, a belief that innovative fashion can come from recycled fabrics.

architecture of the historic Lincoln Bank lobby, the perfect venue to debut SweaterNation.

FTLMODA.com launched

Fort Lauderdale, Fla. – FTL MODA will launch the concept of a greater Fort Lauderdale-based International Fashion Week, a concept unique in the United States, Jan. 25-28, 2007. This 4-day event is a “mini” version of what will be presented annually starting in 2008.

FTLMODA.com will carry designer information, schedule updates, promotional materials for media and information on tickets and passes.

FTL MODA will flaunt the hottest European, Latin and Caribbean designers in front of the American fashion scene and expose Fort Lauderdale to the international marketplace. Each of the 15 featured designers has been hand selected to premiere fresh, full Spring 2008 collections. Available will be haute couture for women and men, swimwear, resort wear, accessories, jewelry and footwear.

FTL MODA will redefine couture for the 21st century by returning it to the people. Fashionistas and rank and file alike will have the same opportunity to purchase directly at the event. Each showcase will go directly from the runway to the showroom, each of the more than 350 pieces from the model to a purchaser. Each design will be one-of-a-kind, cosmopolitan couture, constructed for immediate consumption.

FTL MODA will inspire a series of select cultural events in addition to two days of world-class fashion: an exposition by celebrated sculptural artist Massimo Sansavini, the American debut of Italian musical sensations Studio 3 and the Mandolin Brothers, a Tuscan culinary event of gastronomic proportions, a classical concert by renowned orchestral group I Solisti Veneti and MODAmici, an extraordinary pet fashion show.

FTL MODA is a registered Florida non-profit organization. Partial net proceeds from FTL MODA also will be donated to The Pet Project in Fort Lauderdale, the University of Miami’s Juvenile Diabetes Research Project led by Italian scientist Camillo Ricordi and Funding Arts Broward, an arts organization committed to preserving and cultivating the arts in Broward County.

Broward County Waste and Recycling Services condacted art contests that we are sponsoring in honor of America Recycles Day 2006. A major part of the America Recycles program is the
collection of recycling pledges as a nationwide effort to persuade citizens to commit to recycle and to purchase recycled content materials.As part of our 2006 campaign, Broward County WRS will present "Beauty and the Bins: Preserving Broward's Natural Beauty Through Recycling" - arecycled art exhibit, held at ArtServe in Fort Lauderdale, open to all
local artists - and the Broward Recycles Student Poster Art Contest -for all Broward County public school students. Attached are files containing information for both contests.

This event is initiated and organized by very professional team of very dedicated people. My personal opinion is that we are lucky to have this event. And we are going to contribute heavily in the success of this project.

We already have our students and alumni who are showing collections.

Dear Fashion Students,
Thanks to all of you who participated in our “Halloween Project Runway”. All of your efforts were appreciated, each costume was equally impressive. Creativity and ingenuity aside, the most impressive feat was that they were completed in one hour’s time! For those of you that were not able to make it, the participants had one hour to complete a garment. They were allowed to bring their own fabric, Student Affairs provided the extra items. We had feathers, glitter, wigs, hats, paper streamers, pom-poms, strips of fabric, streamers, ribbon, and glue guns. At the conclusion of the hour, 5 arbitrary judges from the Student Government Association, walked around and scored their favorites on a scale of 1-5.
I’ll be honest; we almost decided to change the contest to “Make a Costume for a Pumpkin” because I thought that it would be unfeasible to finish a human sized costume in one hour. I was wrong. Your professors had such faith in you that they insisted on a human sized costume. Glad to see that the AiFL students can think on their feet! Thanks again for your participation and I’ll look forward to seeing you at the upcoming events.

Holiday Fashion Show at The Contour Day Spa

On the evening of December 9th, 2006, Mrs. Adrian and a group of student designers will be producing a Holiday Fashion Show at The Contour Day Spa. Any student interested in participating, either with eveningwear garments, or as models or dressers, please submit your replies ASAP. Garments need to be in no later that Tuesday, Nov. 14th.

I was wondering if you know of a Make Up Artist student that is willing to work for free (if I have to pay them I would like to discuss that with them). I have a photo session on November 25 now 5 models instead of 3, one is a Miami Heat dancer, the other is a Miami Dolphins Cheerleader, two ballet dancers and the other is a student. All selects of the photos will be given to the MUA by DVD (they make the prints themselves). The help would be great. Thank you.

Students from the Fashion Design Department accompanied by the head of Communications and overall PR maven: Arlene Wites. Instructor Kathleen Colussy and her students were guests on Tues. October 24^th NBC 6 South Florida segment on HOW – TO make a Venetian Mask.

According Ms. Colussy, her Accessory Design students were the stars of the episode, especially Elaine La Plante who was interviewed on air as she demonstrated how she made her animal print inspired mask with South Florida Today’s Show host: Lonnie Quinn Seen Below with Kathleen and the girls!

While chatting with Kathy and the girls after the show it was discovered that Lonnie in addition to his career in broadcasting was also a Fine Arts major …hum? Lonnie perhaps you missed your calling? Maybe that’s why he encouraged his viewers to learn more about the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale!

Elaine was selected by Ms. Colussy to be in air for several reasons. Recently she traveled with Ms. Colussy to visit Venice Italy in Sept. of this year.

In addition to her travel’s Elaine an avid beader was encouraged by Ms. Colussy within her Accessory’s Class to enter the Swarovski Student International Design Contest. The result of the contest was of the 20 international semi-finalist chosen… 5 of the 20 came from Ms. Colussy’s class, with Elaine garnering 2 of those 5 spots! Other winners were: Eunah Lee, Shida Dayani, and Eva Cukok.

Several of these students are saving to travel to Tucson, Arizona in Jan. 07 where the final winner’s will be announced.

History of Mask:

According to Ms. Colussy, mask making has roots from the theater with ancient Greece. . Mask again reappear in medieval folk festivals, court or aristocratic parties with political subtext in the Renaissance (think Shakespeare: A Mid Summer’s Nights Dream and Romeo and Juliet) as well as in the Jacobean, Tudor, Henry the 8^thand Elizabethan court. The popularity of mask culminated to its zenith in the reign of Louis the 14^th court at Versailles. Later we see masks once again at the turn of the 19^th century in costume balls held by the wealthy NY elite society of the Astor’s and of course Henry Flagler at his estate in Palm Beach.

Wednesday Oct 25th. The Office of Student Affairs will be hosting a “Halloween Make Your Own Costume in One Hour Contest!” This is where the Fashion Club and the Fashion Department come in. Mr. West have graciously offered supplies for this event. It will be held at 12 pm in the Student Lounge of the Main Building, Wednesday, Oct 25th. There will be two prizes awarded. One prize for the best “Human Costume” and one for the best “Pumpkin Costume”. You will be informed about details shortly. Make sure you bring all of your energy and creative flair!! I first want to thank you for showing interest in fashion journalism at our school. We have so many opportunities to be the best but we have to work for it. So that weeds out the ones who dont want it as bad. With that being said, this newsletter needs to be better than the last one. This is what we need to be successful:

Three articles included in every issue:

* West Desk- interview, news and information from our department chair

* Alumni Corner- interview, update and information from an alumni who recently graduated and is in the industry

* The Bin- an exclusive article displaying one fabric resource for our sewing students

This issue: F.A.B.(fashion.art.beauty) Fall Vol.2

* Color Trends for male/female- details on what to wear and what not to wear

* Local Mall- directions to and fashionable stores located in mall

We have decided to release a one-page back/front issue every other week. This way we can stay current. So keep your ears open for new material. The issue is printed in black and white but I am trying to get color copies...it will take some time. Because of this we must be careful with fonts and designs because it can become distorted. Dont worry, I edit everything before we print!

I need you to send me back what you want to research and write on for the newsletter. Dont worry about length, its more important that we have content. It shouldnt be more than a paragraph because we dont have alot of space. You can do more than one, so dig in!

Now, if you interested in graphics then please send the jpeg to this email. Remember to think fashion, art, and beauty which the name of our newsletter. We need illustrations that are in black & white for printing purposes. Thank you in advance for your beautiful work. I need a definite response by Thursday.

Firstly thank you for joining our Fashion Club that is the easy part over with.

As you may or may not know the Fashion club is one of the most active groups within the school. Every quarter I assign an instructor to take the helm for while and direct the ship. Ms Adrian did this for a couple of quarters doing numerous shows which we have become famous for. Now this is the second quarter in a row that Mr. Milman is the Captain. Mr. Milman milmandesign@comcast.net is helping drive the club in to the uncharted territories of what people are calling the second wave of the internet. Even though you might not know what this is, most of you are part of it; especially of you have a My Space account, contributed to a Blog or you, You Tube…..

This is one is pretty good, if you are old like me and you remember that at one time album covers was the highest form of art there was.
